Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid yesterday called for launching social movement against child repression.
He made the remarks while addressing a debate competition at Bangladesh Shishu Academy Auditorium in the city on Friday.
The debate titled 'Not good governance, rather social degradation is the main reason for torture on children' was arranged by Debate for Democracy and National Female Child Advocacy Forum in cooperation with PLAN International Bangladesh.
While highlighting various measures taken by the government to rein in child abuse, Nahid said eve-teasing sneaked as a serious problem a few years back but the menace came down drastically because of immediate stringent actions taken by law enforcement agencies.
He, however, said social crimes cannot be fully eradicated through enforcement of laws. "What we should do is to create massive social awareness against such misdeeds."
Chaired by Chairman of Debate For Democracy Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron, the function was also addressed by Bangladesh Shishu Academy Director Mosharraf Hossain, BRAC Director Shipa Hafiza, Saint Joseph Higher Secondary School Principal Father Robi Purification and National Female Child Advocacy Forum secretary Nasima Akter Joly.
Bajrajoghini JK High School, Munshiganj and Adamjee Cantonment College emerged joint champions at the debate competition.
